About the artist
L’artista
From the Craft of Photography to Digital Imagination
Dalla materia fotografica all’immaginazione digitale
Born in Milan in 1959, Gian Paolo Tomasi’s career spans more than fifty years of image-making, from hand retouching to digital experimentation. His practice combines the precision of a craftsman with the freedom of an artist, embracing photography as a medium open to invention.
He began working in a Milanese photographic retouching studio in 1974. Through brushes, film and meticulous work by hand, he developed a deep understanding of colour and image construction. During the 1980s, he specialised in photographic duplication and image processing for advertising, eventually founding Poliart Color.
In the 1990s, together with his brother Roberto, he invented and patented Phototransfer, an innovative photographic contact-printing process. The quality of this technique led him to work with photographs by some of the most influential figures in international photography, including Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Hiro, Chuck Close, William Wegman, Annie Leibovitz, Sebastião Salgado, Oliviero Toscani, Giovanni Gastel and Franco Fontana, among others.
With the advent of digital technologies, his exploration expanded from printing to image composition. In the late 1990s, he created his first virtual female figures, featured in a twenty-five-page editorial in GQ Italia in 2000. Projects in fashion, beauty, advertising and publishing followed, exploring the boundary between photographic reality and artistic imagination.
His encounter with gallerist Gianfranco Composti and the Ca’ di Fra’ gallery opened a new chapter of exhibitions. In 2003, he chose to devote himself entirely to art. Around the same time, his first journey to Kenya, at the invitation of artist and gallerist Isaia Mabellini, known as Sarenco, began a lasting connection that would profoundly shape his life and work.

Africa became central to his artistic exploration. Landscapes, faces and female figures appear throughout works in which photography and digital construction intertwine. From the Tsavo and Lamu series to In Art We Can and I Saw African Women I and II, portraiture becomes a meeting place for identity, memory and vision.
Working between Italy and Kenya, with exhibitions internationally, Tomasi continues to develop his visual language. In late 2024, The Art Hills began to take shape in the hills overlooking Kenya’s Sabaki River, a project bringing art, landscape and human connection into a shared space.
